Treasure Fingers: Disco is Back

Posted 15 Dec 2010 in Music

It’s about time the funk came back to town! Since the release of his debut single “Cross The Dancefloor,” Ashley Jones, better known as Treasure Fingers, has reintroduced disco into today’s electro movement. Jones has been creating some of the most innovative and truly funky electronic music in the past few years, anchored by a decade of accumulated DJ knowledge and Brooklyn-via-ATL swagger. Over these past two years, this DJ and producer has been bringing back those Saturday night fevers ranging from remixes for pop upstarts (Miike Snow, Little Boots, Chromeo), indie dance heroes (Tensnake, Classixx, Fred Falke & Burns) or his own original tracks; Jones cleverly blends each new tune with elements of house, disco, R&B and more. In his latest track, “Keep Up”, Jones smoothly combines vocoder funk and throwback freestyle drums with vocals from newcomer Haley Small.

In his early years, Jones started with hip- hop and experimental sounds around age 14 on his father’s drum machine and 4track. At age 16, Jones joined a high school punk/hardcore band. When the band didn’t work out, Jones continued experimenting on his own with different beats, electronics and computer software. While getting started, he began DJing at warehouse or rave parties.

Jones has racked up over a decade of international club experience and studio chops as part of the drum & bass group, Evol Intent. Under his new name, Treasure Fingers, Jones has found a way to merge his diverse influences and deep history into a signature sound, which features intricate basslines, chopped-up, gritty synth melodies and bumping drum breaks. It comes as no surprise that this recent project of his caught A-Trak’s ear and signed Jones with his record label, Fools Gold.

His funky sound is underground but is still accessible to a wide audience since he incorporates some pop elements with catchy vocals or a big synthesizer lead. Jones describes his music influences and style: “mainly it’s early- to mid-eighties funk and house music and kind of fusing those two together. So you get this kind of funky, really synth-y element with a strong house beat.” In other words, this man knows how to get people to shake their asses, whether it’s on the dance floor or in the privacy of their own home.

Now, its time to boogie:
