St. Vincent @ the First Unitarian Church in Philadelphia 02/25/2010
On Thursday, the 25th, St. Vincent played a great concert in the Sanctuary of the First Unitarian Church in Philadelphia. I was lucky enough to catch the show since I’m home on break. St. Vincent is Annie Clark, a phenomenal singer and guitar player. Backed by a very talented band, Annie had a graceful stage presence that made it hard to look away. Formerly a member of The Polyphonic Spree, Annie has opened as St. Vincent for about every amazing artist you can think of. She’s put out two LPs, Marry Me in 2007 and Actor in 2009, which received a large amount of critical praise.
I also want to explain to Montreal-ers how cool this venue is. It’s a sanctuary, so it’s essentially a giant room with pews, open floor space, and a just big enough stage. The vibe in there is so unique; people sit on the floor in front of the stage, others peacefully chill seated in the pews, and you’re allowed to bring drinks in (not that I would ever drink underage in the States…). I’ve heard of so many good shows at the Church, but this was my first time to the venue and I’ll most definitely be back.
Thanks to our friend Colin Kerrigan of The Pistola Press, a great Philly music blog, we have this video of Annie telling the crowd about a very interesting experience in Columbus, Ohio. It’s pretty funny. Especially because it was told in a church. Definitely worth a view.
