2 Many Videos

Posted 25 Apr 2010 in Music

About as far back as I can remember (truthfully, like 5 days tops), electronic music has been growing in size and popularity. The past decade has seen the emergence of new genres, the revival of old ones, countless acts and a surging fan base. With this immense popularity, artists will be looking for new ways to stand apart from the mass of DJs (too many, some might say). We already see costumes (the Mau5 head, the Beetroot masks), groups like the Gorillaz that take on entirely new personas, and of course, ridiculous light shows. Mash-masters 2 Many Djs (one branch of the Soulwax phenomenon) already stand apart in the sea of music with their consistently varied and innovative style, dropping remixes and mashes of artists ranging from The Residents to Basement Jaxx to The Stooges and Salt ‘n Pepa, not to mention their Soulwax reworks. As if they didn’t stand out enough, the Belgian duo have been accompanying their performance with a wicked new visual component for about a year now. Check it out.

This first one is a shaky bastard from Coachella this past week.

This guy is from 2009′s Soulwaxmas in Belgium. HD baby!

Not only are the animations funny, well-made, and  perfectly cued to the music (I suspect wizardry), but they let the crowd know exactly what samples and songs they are listening to. This serves two purposes, equally as important in my mind: it gives credit where credit is due to the original artists in a fun and unique way, and it shows off just how skilled the Belgian duo are. Watching these videos is almost a game, trying to guess or figure out how they will mix from one song to next. 2 Many DJs is quickly rising on the list of shows I’d love to see. For the road, here are a few tracks, and one last video of Deadmau5 with his new get up. This is all getting pretty wild, I must admit.
