Songs and Vid'o'day
Midterms are fast approaching, leaving us searching for any and all means of procrastination… I guess that means it’s time for some videos and songs of the day!
One of the best ways we have found to avoid any school work is to watch the new videos from Los Campesinos! and Jónsi Birgisson of Sigur Ros (for their songs “Romance is Boring” and “Go Do” respectively), and try to figure out what the hell is going on. So far, we’ve got that Los Campesinos! have issues with domestic abuse/poorly working TVs/Lucha Libres, and that Jonsi really likes birds. Past that, though, we understand it about as much as we do the influence of monotheistic religions on state formation (and the subsequently formed political institutions) in pre- and post-colonial Africa. Or, y’know, not at all.
We’re working on embedding the video for “Go Do”, but until then, you can watch the video here.
Today’s song of the day is the first official track released from Erykah Badu’s upcoming album New Amerykah, Pt. II: Return of the Ankh, set to drop March 30th. The soulful “Window Seat”, which features ?uestlove on drums, sets the tone for the new album, one which Badu described as “more emotional and flowy and talks about [my] feelings. It reminds of the days of ‘Baduizm’ — this is just about beats and rhymes in a cipher”. She describes this apparent departure from her socially and politically charged New Amerykah Part One: 4th World War as representative of her two schools of thought, one that is more analytical and one that is more emotional. We got our first taste of Return of the Ankh when an unfinished version of “Jump in the Air” (a track that was set to feature a whole slew of guest rappers, including Lil Wayne and Andre 3000) was leaked. Badu removed the song from the official tracklist, but allowed for a version featuring Lil Wayne and Bilal to be added as a web-only release.

In other news, the Bonnaroo lineup comes out tomorrow. These 24 hours already feel like 24 years.
