Sit Down, Man
The Brooklyn-based stoner rap sensation Das Racist have returned! The duo released their second mixtape, Sit Down, Man, yesterday, hoping to follow up on the success of their last release, Shut Up, Dude, which came out in March. While Shut Up, Dude quickly emerged as an internet smash-hit, Himanshu Suri (aka Heems) and his partner in crime Victor Vazquez (aka Kool A.D) became extremely polarizing figures in the hip-hop community. Some (like myself) found their stream of consciousness flows and tongue-in-cheek wit to be a breath of fresh air into a genre inundated with fakes and Lil’ Wayne impostors. At the same time, others saw tracks like ‘Combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell‘ as garbage that only pot smoking idiots could appreciate.
Whatever you thought about their last mixtape, Sit Down, Man is definitely worth a listen. Here the boys return with a vengeance, recruiting heavyweight producers such as Diplo, El-P, Chairlift, Quincy Jones and Devo Springsteen to help craft their beats. On Sit Down, Man, the self-described “smartest dumb guys in the room” rap about a wide range of issues, including racism, fashion, quarks and leptons, and their love of all things green (if you catch my drift.) In an age where political correctness dominates most forms of media, it’s refreshing to hear from two dudes who clearly do not give a f*ck about it. I strongly recommend that you go download the full mixtape ASAP, but until you do, here are a few of my favorite tracks.
