LP4
New York guitar/synth duo Ratatat are back with their sixth studio album since 2004, LP4. As you might imagine based on the name, LP4 is the follow-up to 2008′s LP3, an album which propelled Ratatat to new heights in terms of their popularity. LP4, in both name and style, closely resembles LP3 in most aspects, but while the individual style of the songs may not vary much, Mike Stroud (guitar) and his counterpart Evan Mast (synthesizers, bass) never fail to impress.
On this album, Ratatat does not deviate much from the classic sound of their previous works. On tracks like ‘Neckbrace’ and ‘Drugs,’ however, Mast and Stroud delve a little deeper into the electronic side of their instruments, combing more electro-style beats with their usual wild synth and guitar riffs. On the other hand, tracks like ‘Party With Children’ focus more on the heavily-distorted guitar skills of Stroud than the drum machines and synthesizers.
Overall, if you liked what you heard on LP3 and found yourself wanting more, then you should be immensely satisfied with this album. However if you found yourself secretly hoping the boys would re-invent their style and come out with totally new sound for their new album, you may be slightly disappointed. At the same time, considering the popularity and success of LP3, I think it’s safe to say that Ratatat definitely found a winning formula for their music, so there’s no reason to stray from the style that both they and their fans know so well.
Here’s an old favorite from 2004′s Classics…
