LCD Soundsystem @ Metropolis 05/24/2010
Last Monday we had the pleasure of seeing Holy Ghost! and LCD Soundsystem live at Metropolis. We arrived to the venue in time to see Holy Ghost! play through their recent EP, Static on the Wire. The first thing that struck me about their performance was their stage set up, which was impressive to say the least. To create their signature dreamy synth waves, the boys from Brooklyn employ a lot of old school equipment, and for a small band they managed to occupy most of the stage. They kept the crowd rocking throughout the set and got a great reception when they finished. Had they been the headliners, the crowd would have definitely demanded a few encores. For more about Holy Ghost and their equipment, check out this video.
While Holy Ghost! set the tone for the evening, LCD Soundsystem put the whole show over the top. They moved through material from all aspects of their discography, playing old favorites such as a rocking rendition of ‘Daft Punk is Playing At My House’ as well as new ones like ‘I Can Change’ and ‘Drunk Girls.’ On top of this variety, LCD accentuated each genre that they have incorporated into their music over the years, as the band weaved through electronic dance tunes, rock ballads, and a few slower songs as well. Despite Metropolis’ rising temperature (and boy did that temperature rise), frontman and mastermind of LCD, James Murphy, kept his band energetic for the entire performance, leading them with his soft singing, harsh wailing, and everything in between. On top of their awe-inspiring performance, the band interacted with one another and the crowd all night, making clear not only that they were glad to be performing, but genuinely excited to be in Montreal playing together for us. We neither expected nor were prepared for what a party it turned out to be; it’s been a while since we’ve attended such a good dance party or rock concert, let along both at the same time. LCD seriously brought the heat, and we cannot suggest strongly enough making it out to see them if they happen to stop by your town. Seriously. Do it. You won’t be disappointed.
