Jónsi Birgisson debuts new tracks live
It’s big news that Sigur Rós frontman Jónsi Birgisson has debuted new tracks live on a public radio show. But before I get to that, I just want to say how great of a band I think Sigur Rós is. Every single album they have put out, from Agaetis Byrjun (2000) to their most recent, Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust (2008), has been a masterpiece. Last year, I finally got to see them live, and it was by far one of the best musical experiences of my life. If you ever get the chance to seem them, I highly recommend going. It really was just unreal. Anyway, back to Jónsi Birgisson…

Yesterday, Jónsi treated a New York public radio show, “Soundcheck”, to an interview and in-studio performances of multiple tracks from his upcoming second solo album, Go. He discusses many things about the album, as well as some quirky things about himself. Fans of Jónsi will also likely get a kick out of hearing the singer speak without his typical falsetto voice, which he also discusses. As far as the new tracks go, they’re gorgeous. Birgisson played three full tracks – Boy Lilikoi, Go Do, and Around Us – on piano and three-string ukelele. They’re great indicators that there are more fantastic tracks to come on his new album.
Go comes out March 23. Word is that Jónsi plans on touring this spring. So far he’s only announced a show at Coachella, but there’s promise of more tour dates to come.
