Jamie xx FACT Mix
In many ways, listening to electronic music takes a lot of patience. While there are always new EPs and releases coming out from some great producers that can keep you entertained for a while, discovering something innovative and fresh that you can’t exactly categorize can often take quite a long time. It was starting to seem like forever since I heard something like this from the dubstep genre. It’s not my intention to bad mouth any of these producers, but it was just starting to seem like every new track from Skrillex, Zeds Dead, Flux Pavilion, Datsik and whoever else sounded all too familiar on my first listen. Yes, some of the songs were sick, but it somehow felt like I had listened to them before.
The breakthrough finally came when I discovered the work of London-based producer Jamie Smith, better known as Jamie xx. Without even realizing it, however, I have been a fan of Jamie’s work for a few years already at this point, dating back to his time as a member of The xx . The minimal and melancholy construction of The xx’s songs carry over in Jamie’s solo work, and while his tight and syncopated drum patterns may match the style and rhythm of dubstep beats, there are no filthy drops or mechanical noises to be heard. Jamie xx’s lo-fi grooves can be as hypnotic as they are perplexing, but when they work the results are truly outstanding.
