Interpol @ Crocodile Rock Cafe 06/25/2010
Last night, Interpol played a concert that could only be described as astounding. The venue was Crocodile Rock Cafe, a medium-sized spot in Allentown, PA. Openers Twin Tigers set the tone for the show nicely. Interpol have been on my must-see list for years, and since this is perhaps their last tour, there was no way I was missing it. There was some ridiculous bouncer vs. camera action about a minute into Interpol’s set, but below you can check out the few pictures I was able to get. Also, have a listen to new Twin Tigers along with one of my favorite Interpol songs and an awesome remix.
Twin Tigers opened with a strong, impressive set. I’d only recently heard of this Athens, Georgia-based band, so I was excited to hear more from them. Lead by Matthew Rain on guitar and vocals, they had the crowd bopping along from the start. The group transitioned smoothly from song to song, playing an engaging rock set. Bassist Aimee Morris stuck out with her bright pink hair, and all of the members were fun to watch as they were clearly enjoying themselves. They have a new LP out on Old Flame Records, check it out.
It was time for Interpol, and the crowd grew restless during the setup. The constant cheers finally brought the group to the stage, and they opened the show with a bang, playing ‘Success’ from their upcoming album. Paul Banks’ stage presence was immediately felt as he sang in his unmistakable voice. Banks stayed close to the mic for most of the show, but guitar player Daniel Kessler kept things busy by almost constantly moving around the stage. Throughout the set, we were treated to brilliant renditions of Interpol songs that spanned their career. We got to hear everything: older classics, slightly newer stuff from Our Love to Admire, and even some material off of their upcoming LP, Interpol. A particular highlight was the last song, a rousing performance of ‘Not Even Jail’. As a bonus, the light show was awesome, complimenting the music perfectly. The group took their songs above and beyond what they sound like in their recordings. They far exceeded my expectations, and made for a great live experience.

wait…why do you think that this will be their last tour?
i should have been clearer that that’s my own speculation…with the departure of carlos d and the crazy tour rearranging/cancellations, it just seems unlikely. although a tour in support of the upcoming LP would be awesome, they’d have to go basically back to back with their europe tour to make that happen. we shall see though, hopefully i’m wrong.
ARGH they’re going to be playing here when I’m home and home when I’m here. Why must they torture me??
I just saw Twin Tigers in St. Petersburg with The Beauvilles. Both bands put on a solid rock and roll show. I haven’t seen Interpol since they last toured through Florida. You can kind of hear the Athens influence in their newl album.
