Igloofest III: The Grand Finale
We know that it’s always hard to say goodbye, but another year of Igloofest came to an end this weekend. Overall, we managed to make it to 5 out of the 9 nights, and we had a blast at each one. What’s great about Igloofest is that every night is a unique experience with a different crowd, a different music style, and a different vibe. We think it really speaks to this city’s character that no matter how cold it got (try -33º C this past Friday night), people still turned out in droves to party. Here in Montreal, we don’t let a silly thing like the weather ruin our good time.
Friday brought us the pure insanity of Douster, Rusko and King Cannibal, and this show was not for the weak of heart. It was one of the coldest nights of the year so far, but after spending 10 minutes dancing in the huddled crowd, you could hardly feel it. Standing above the masses, you saw as steam rose from the ever pulsating crowd (one that was dotted with giant Lego heads, animal masks, and of course 80′s style neon one-pieces). The energy level was off the charts for the entire show, starting with Douster’s epic drop straight out of the Lion King. That set the stage for Rusko, who had more energy and stage presence than any DJ we’ve seen in a long while. He put down a picture-perfect set, sending the crowd into a frenzy with every impossibly loud drop. King Cannibal went just as hard in his signature futuristic and, honestly pretty creepy, style. Drum and Bass has never sounded so evil.
And for all you new fans of Dubstep, here are some more tracks to get your collections started
Excision & Datsik – Calypso (Original Mix)
Calvin Harris – Not Alone (Doorly Remix)
Saturday was the goodbye party, and we refused to miss it no matter how exhausted we were after Friday night’s festivities. Joris Voorn and Nic Fanciulli laid down some chilled out trancy house beats that kept the crowd bobbing and grooving all night. Although the music was less intense than Friday night (not to mention the comparatively lackluster lights), the atmosphere surrounding this final night kept the crowd alive all the way through to the final two encores. It may not have been as wild as Friday night’s show, but it was a fitting end to our favorite outdoor electro extravaganza.
Until next year, Igloofest. We will miss you.
