How I Got Over

How I Got Over is the 8th and most recent studio album from Philly hip-hop legends The Roots. Growing up in Philly, it was impossible to ignore the innovative, soulful and exceptionally raw music of ?estlove (Ahmir Thompson), Black Thought (Tariq Trotter) and the rest of their crew. On How I Got Over, The Roots re-establish their hip-hop dominance, simultaneously proving to old fans and critics alike that their stint as Jimmy Fallon’s house band didn’t adversely affect or belittle their drive to create great music.

Crossover popularity can be a dangerous thing. Often, talented groups will begin to outgrow their original fan base as their music moves more and more into mainstream culture. As the pressures and expectations of success begin to mount, bands risk losing touch with their roots (pardon the pun) and the messages that got them into making music in the first place. I’ll admit that I, like many others, was a bit skeptical when I learned that my beloved Roots would be performing every night for a late night television show. While it was obviously a big step forward in their careers, a move like that could have transformed some bands from serious performers into a sideshow attraction. On How I Got Over, The Roots dispel any doubt as they return to the studio with a renewed drive, in order to prove that they are just as serious about their music as ever.

On this album The Roots collaborate with a wide range of artists, including John Legend, Joanna Newsom and even Monsters of Folk. By working with such an eclectic mix of musicians, The Roots adapt their funk and soul oriented sound to many different styles, creating truly unique and innovative beats. In my opinion, come December we will be looking back on this album as one of the best of 2010, so do yourselves a favor and pick up a copy. Until you get the whole thing, here are a few tracks to hold you over. Much love
