Congratulations!
Well it’s finally here. The much-anticipated follow up album Congratulations from psychedelic rock duo MGMT hit the inter-tubes a few days ago, and they wanted to make sure we heard it from them first. So for us, the listeners, MGMT is streaming the whole album for free at Whoismgmt.com, similar to what Radiohead did with In Rainbows a few years back. I love the idea of bands giving their music directly to the listeners, and I hope that we’ll be seeing a lot more of it in the future. MGMT has this to say on their website:
“Hey everybody, the album leaked, and we wanted you to be able to hear it from us. We wanted to offer it as a free download but that didn’t make sense to anyone but us.”
Makes sense to me too. As for the album itself, if you’re looking for a super catchy repeat single like ‘Kids’, you won’t really find one here. ‘Brian Eno’ comes close, but a lot of the songs on the album are more chilled-out and dreamy rather than danceable (‘Lady Dada’s Nightmare’ even features about two minutes of the two of them screaming over the music). Overall, Congratulations strikes me more as music MGMT really wanted to make and not what they thought would get massively popular again. But regardless of what I think, it’s always good to see artists reaching out to their fans.

EDIT: The irony of being asked to remove these tracks is almost astounding. Almost.
