Grum + The Twelves @ Le Belmont 05/01/2010
Grum and The Twelves threw down for a packed crowd at Le Belmont on Saturday night. With the main acts not coming on until late, opener Le Matos got the audience pumped. It wasn’t too difficult a feat, since everyone has been in full-on party hardy mode since finals ended. Things got into full swing as soon as Grum came on. Playing an extremely danceable set, he was also a fun artist to watch; he was clearly engaged in his…
Yeasayer @ Le National: May 2, 2010
This past Sunday (to some, Funday), we had the pleasure of seeing Yeasayer perform at Le National (we unfortunately only caught the end of Sleigh Bells, but we heard good things). I must admit, expectation were high for this show: we (the royal we) have grown to love both All Hour Cymbals and Odd Blood, and had heard a few rave reviews about their live performances from some respected sources (thank you McSandwhichewildes). So after a long trek down St….
White Rabbits w/ The Hoof & The Heel @ Petit Campus 04/28/2010
We had the opportunity to see White Rabbits perform at Petit Campus on Wednesday. Montreal’s The Hoof & The Heel opened with an impressive set. Once White Rabbits took the stage, they filled the small venue with their stage presence and energetic music. This was one of the most engaging shows I’ve seen in a while, and I’d definitely take the opportunity to see them again. Check out the review of the concert, some mp3s, a music video, and pictures by clicking ‘read more’.
Gogol Bordello @ Metropolis: April 18, 2010
Gogol Bordello, the Gypsy Punk rockers known around the world for their outrageous and energetic stage performances, brought their carnival-like live act to Metropolis on Sunday. I’d never seen them before, so needless to say I was stoked for the show. I’ve always heard that they put on an unreal concert, but I had know idea of just how crazy it was really going to be until I saw it for myself. Check out the review, some mp3s, and some…
Cymbals Eat Guitars + Bear In Heaven @ Il Motore: April 7th, 2010
This past Wednesday we stopped by the relatively new indie club, Il Motore, to check out two bands that have been making waves in the indie rock circles lately. Both Cymbals Eat Guitars and Bear in Heaven have received “best new music” from Pitchfork and various other glowing reviews. There was an excited buzz in the crowd to see what these bands were capable of live. We arrived just on time for Bear In Heaven’s set. I had only just…
The xx @ Metropolis: April 3rd, 2010
The power of the blogosphere can be a very under-appreciated thing. When used correctly, it can lead an unknown project from the underground to millions of hard-drives overnight. This was exactly the case as The xx brought their brand of atmospheric, down-tempo rock to Montreal. The band was virtually unknown when their debut album dropped in August of 2009, but thanks to the web The xx saw their first headlining show in Canada entirely sold out. In fact, the band…
Florence + the Machine w/ Holy Hail @ the TLA in Philadelphia 04/05/2010
Last night, Florence + the Machine put on a mind-blowing, goosebump-inducing concert at the TLA in Philadelphia. We were devastated when we found out that they weren’t coming to Montreal, but I got extremely lucky and was able to catch them on the first night of their US tour. New York City’s Holy Hail opened the show with a catchy, dynamic set. Frontwoman Cat Hartwell led the group in a rousing performance that set the tone perfectly for the evening….
Seabear @ The Green Room: March 30, 2010
On Tuesday, we ventured up Saint Laurent to The Green Room to see Seabear perform. And holy shit, were we in for a fantastic surprise. We went expecting a quiet and intimate show, as we’d come to love fr0m the Icelandic band’s low-key recordings. What we got was even better: the seven piece group put on a gorgeous, high-energy performance for a packed (albeit small) bar. Check out a couple of mp3s and photos below, and be sure to read…
F*ck The Police
This past Thursday we had the opportunity to see Lazer Sword, Flying Lotus, and Benga at the S.A.T. After a rather sloppy set from Lazer Sword, Flying Lotus came on and rocked his signature hip-hop-influenced electro mixed with some wicked bass. However, during FlyLo’s set, somebody (supposedly by the same person) called the cops 4 times with complaints about the epic bass, and as a result the SAT was forced to turn it down for Benga. As it turns out, dubstep…
St. Vincent @ the First Unitarian Church in Philadelphia 02/25/2010
On Thursday, the 25th, St. Vincent played a great concert in the Sanctuary of the First Unitarian Church in Philadelphia. I was lucky enough to catch the show since I’m home on break. St. Vincent is Annie Clark, a phenomenal singer and guitar player. Backed by a very talented band, Annie had a graceful stage presence that made it hard to look away. Formerly a member of The Polyphonic Spree, Annie has opened as St. Vincent for about every amazing…
