After about 45 minutes of sleep, I awoke on Friday to find a stacked lineup for the day. Friday marked the first full day of the festival, and I couldn’t believe how much awesome music was being thrown at me. The Gossip, Damian Marley and Nas, The National, Kings of Leon, The Flaming Lips, The Black Keys, and Chromeo were only a few of the day’s amazing sets. My personal favorites were Tokyo Police Club, Bassnectar, and LCD Soundsystem.

Tokyo Police Club played one of the opening shows to what was at first a mellow crowd. Once their set got going, everyone livened up and started dancing. They seemed to love interacting with the audience, and were very personable. There was a nice Canadian theme going, as Dave Monks announced, “We’re from Canada”, and several people were waving Canadian flags. They played both older material as well as songs off their new album, Champ. Overall, a great start to the day.

One unfortunate aspect of the day was that The Flaming Lips, The Black Keys, Chromeo, and Bassnectar were all slated to perform at the same time on different stages. All day, you could hear people discussing the tough call. Ultimately, I chose Bassnectar since I’d never seen him before. I also just happened to be in the mood for a dance party, and luckily that was exactly what I got. Going into the show I was fairly unfamiliar with Bassnectar’s music; I’d heard a few remixes but that was about it. From the second the first beat dropped, I was blown away. You could feel the floor bumping from the bass, and the crowd was going nuts. He played an hour and a half long set, which left everyone completely satisfied. Definitely one of the best electro shows I’ve seen in a long while.

By 2:30 am, the time had finally come for LCD Soundsystem. LCD was by far one of the acts I was most excited for, and James Murphy & co. did not let me down. Despite the late show time, the tent was packed with people. Playing old and new favorites, Murphy put on a performance that was full of energy. He was clearly enjoying himself, as well as the response from the crowd. Throughout the set, hundreds of glow sticks were tossed onto the audience to everyone’s delight. The show was one of the best of Bonnaroo for me, and I definitely recommend seeing them if you get the chance.
