Mixtape Fridays
Well here we are at long last. We made it through exams in one piece (barely) and now its time to finally get out and enjoy ourselves. Like we’ve mentioned before, this weekend is the perfect opportunity to kick off your summer the right way with shows from the Twelves, Grum and Yeasayer. We’ll also have a chance to talk with Grum pretty soon, so stay tuned for that. In other news we’re infinitely psyched for May in Montreal, and…
Hold On!
Happy hump day kiddos. We haven’t done dubstep in a little while, so I thought it’d be appropriate to share some new Rusko that I just stumbled upon. The track is a remix of the single ‘Hold On’ from his upcoming LP, OMG. The original song features Amber Coffman of Dirty Projectors notoriety. Her vocals are always phenomenal, but it’s truly impressive how well she adapted her voice to fit the electro/dubstep genre. I’d honestly like to hear her sing…
Born Free
Looks like we have another music video controversy on our hands, this time courtesy of our favorite Sri Lankan singer, songwriter, rapper, producer, fashion designer and icon, visual artist and political activist M.I.A.! What fun. The controversy surrounds the new graphic and violent video for ‘Born Free’, which premiered on her website Monday. By Tuesday, the video had been removed by Youtube. The video, directed by Romain Gavras (Justice’s A Cross the Universe), follows a SWAT-esque team (donning American flags…
Holy shit, look at the NEW New Montreal!!
We’re baaaack! We’ve redesigned the site and we hope you guys dig it as much as we do. The new site marks the start of some big changes here at TNM. The school year is wrapping up, so eventually (sigh) we’re going to have to head on home for the summertime. But fear not! The blog will live on, just via coverage from our hometowns of Philadelphia and New York City. You can expect to see Philly coverage popping up…
Total Life Forever
Every so often, I’ll get my hands on an album that will completely hook me, forcing me to play it on repeat for days (sometimes even weeks) before I can stop. My latest obsession started when I picked up the new LP from Foals, a 5 piece indie/math rock band out of Oxford. Total Life Forever is their second studio album, and it’s set to release on May 10th. You may not have heard of the band’s first album, 2008′s…
2 Many Videos
About as far back as I can remember (truthfully, like 5 days tops), electronic music has been growing in size and popularity. The past decade has seen the emergence of new genres, the revival of old ones, countless acts and a surging fan base. With this immense popularity, artists will be looking for new ways to stand apart from the mass of DJs (too many, some might say). We already see costumes (the Mau5 head, the Beetroot masks), groups like…
Thank You
What’s up Montreal. First off we’d like to apologize for slacking on the posts recently. Not to make excuses, but managing a blog gets significantly tougher during exam time. Don’t worry though, very soon we’ll be able to give the blog all the attention it deserves, complete with some major site renovations. Thanks for making the first few months of The New Montreal more fun and successful than we ever thought possible. We also have some new House for y’all…
Interview w/ Cat Hartwell of Holy Hail
Last week I had the opportunity to chat with Cat Hartwell, frontwoman of NYC’s Holy Hail. She called in from the road as the group was travelling from Chicago to Vancouver as part of their current tour with Florence + the Machine. I caught that show in Philadelphia earlier this month, and ever since I’ve been hooked on the band. Their music runs the gamut from dance-y to indie rock, with just a bit of Southern influence. Cat and I…
Mixtape Fridays
So close yet so far…we’re only 1 week away from the end of the exam period and the sweet, sweet freedom that comes along with it. Above is another sick image from Coachella 2010, and again, we’re pretty pissed we’re not there. We might be missing the fun out in the desert, but there’s plenty going on around here next month to keep us more than satisfied. The first weekend in May will be the perfect way to ring in…
Gogol Bordello @ Metropolis: April 18, 2010
Gogol Bordello, the Gypsy Punk rockers known around the world for their outrageous and energetic stage performances, brought their carnival-like live act to Metropolis on Sunday. I’d never seen them before, so needless to say I was stoked for the show. I’ve always heard that they put on an unreal concert, but I had know idea of just how crazy it was really going to be until I saw it for myself. Check out the review, some mp3s, and some…
