Song and video of the day
Song of the day: Untitled (Interpool Swimwear Remix by Velapene Screen) – Interpol. There are a decent amount of Interpol remixes out there, but this is one of the only ones that does the band justice. It’s definitely catchy (head-bobbing may ensue), but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have its merits. The beats in this lyric-less song are so masterfully arranged that the listener will discover something new every time they play it. Video of the day: Black and Blue…
The Colossus
RJD2 is back on the map with his new album The Colossus, released earlier this week. Marking nearly a decade of work, The Colossus incorporates the many styles that RJD2 has rocked over the years, from the funky (sometimes even soulful) sound of Dead Ringer to his less-appreciated foray into the singer/songwriter role heard on The Third Hand. Although not his best work, the high points of the album (“Games You Can Win”, “A Spaceship for Now”, “The Stranger”) prove…
Jónsi Birgisson debuts new tracks live
It’s big news that Sigur Rós frontman Jónsi Birgisson has debuted new tracks live on a public radio show. But before I get to that, I just want to say how great of a band I think Sigur Rós is. Every single album they have put out, from Agaetis Byrjun (2000) to their most recent, Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust (2008), has been a masterpiece. Last year, I finally got to see them live, and it was by…
Mixtape Fridays
The weekend has arrived everyone, but what music are you going to play at that huge pre-drink you told all your friends you were having? Well the New Montreal is here to help. The Kingston based producers known as South Rakkas Crew just released their newest mixtape, The Stimulus Package, online through Mad Decent for the low, low price of? You guessed it, FREE. South Rakkas combines the biggest sounds in Caribbean dancehall music with fresh electro beats, and personally…
Alive 2011?
SPOILER ALERT: bruce willis is dead the whole time. oh and the track is fake. So it turns out Daft Punk leaked a track called “Fragile” from the Tron Legacy soundtrack a few months back and no one told us. Well, thanks to the internet, we found it! Set to release at the end of this year, Tron Legacy is the sequel to the 1980′s cult classic Tron (a sequel that we’ve been waiting for since the rumors that started back…
Igloofest: the Beginning
Igloofest is upon us once again boys and girls. It’s time to grab your parkas and get ready to party because you’re right in the middle of one of the best outdoor electro music festivals in North America. Thursday kicked the off festivities with Canada’s own Mini, followed by David Carretta and Jesse Rose (whose sample-heavy fidget-house set drove the eager crowd wild). Friday brought the minimal house and house-tech sounds of Mono-poly, Robert Babicz, Adultnapper, and Philip Bader. Saturday’s lineup…
The xx has a busy, busy day + song and video of the day
One of our favorite British bands, the xx, had quite a presence on the music scene today. First off, they released the music video for their song ‘VCR’. Directed by Marcus Söderlund, the love song comes to life in a mostly black and white depiction of sweet violence and romance. Click here to see some of the bands other videos, they’re pretty cool. Secondly, Gilles Pearson announced that the xx will be covering Gil Scott-Heron’s upcoming new album I’m New…
Another reason we love Danger Mouse
Danger Mouse is quickly proving to be one of the best musical minds to come around in a long time. It seems that every few years we hear about the new project Danger Mouse is working on, create a giant buzz around it, and then fall in love with the results. We first heard his name when he released The Grey Album, skillfully combining two of the most powerful forces in music history (Jay Z and the Beatles) into amazing…
Transference
Anytime we hear a new album, expect to get a review. Be it albums we love, hate, expected more from, were surprised by, or found secret-satanic messages in (I’m talking to you Bon Iver. Don’t think I didn’t notice). If there’s a new album dropped that you think is worth a listen, don’t hesitate to give us a shout and we’ll tell you what we think. So Spoon just released their seventh studio album Transference this week. Shying from the…
