Igloofest III: The Grand Finale
We know that it’s always hard to say goodbye, but another year of Igloofest came to an end this weekend. Overall, we managed to make it to 5 out of the 9 nights, and we had a blast at each one. What’s great about Igloofest is that every night is a unique experience with a different crowd, a different music style, and a different vibe. We think it really speaks to this city’s character that no matter how cold it…
Mixtape Fridays: Week 2
Welcome to the weekend kids, we hope you’re all ready to go wild after a long week of work. There’s a lot going on over the next few days, including Brodinski tonight at the S.A.T and the final days of Igloofest. Here are some tracks to help get you in the mood to rage. Diplo and the crew over at MadDecent released Free Gucci: Best of the Cold War Mixtapes a few weeks ago. This album is chock-full of bangers,…
Song and video of the day
Song of the day: Shiva – The Antlers. We completely love The Antlers right now. That is all. Video of the day: I Sing I Swim – Seabear. This is from a while back, but it’s still an absolutely lovely video and song. I also wanted to put this up here because Seabear is getting ready to drop their new album, We Built a Fire, in March. Straight out of Reykjavik, Iceland, Seabear’s 2007 The Ghost That Carried Us Away…
GZA/Genius kills it at Foufounes
Need we say more? We were lucky enough to see GZA, aka Genius, the founding father and mastermind behind the Wu Tang Clan, at Foufounes Electronique last night. For those of you who are unfamiliar with his work, the GZA is one of the most influential hip-hop producers and rappers of the last 20 years. Along with bringing together the legendary Wu Tang Clan, the GZA has had his hands in different projects for years, including his 6 solo albums…
The Knife gets down at the opera
The Knife, best known for their catchy 2005 single Heartbeats, has teamed up with Mt. Sims and Planningtorock to create a soundtrack for an experimental opera based on Darwin’s On the Origin of Species called ‘Tomorrow, In A Year’, commissioned by the Danish performance group Hotel Pro Forma. The single from the soundtrack, Colouring of Pigeons, was released a while ago and attracted a huge amount of attention on the music scene. In fact, it was already one of our…
Dude. Dude. Check out these nachos.
This afternoon my roommate ran into my office yelling something about a new Justice leak. Probably due to the recent Daft Punk debocle, I was pretty skeptical. But sure enough, the promo team from Ed Banger Records had sent out the new track “Beginning of the End” themselves! This track was to be the first to be released off of Justice’s new album (which is yet to be named) set to hit stores ‘early 2010′. The track is slow to…
Awkward…
This was just too funny/uncomfortable not to blog about. Last night, of Montreal played a show at NYC’s Highline Ballroom. Firstly, let me explain that seeing of Montreal live is like a musical acid trip starring Kevin Barnes. It’s not unusual to see people dancing around in oversized masks or head to toe glitter jumpsuits. It’s not like their music isn’t eclectic enough, but add into the equation their crazy stage antics and you have a truly memorable experience. So…
The Clipse come clean
Till The Casket Drops, the newest album from renowned hip-hop duo The Clipse, gives us a reflective and brutally honest look at life (and death) in the slums of Virginia Beach. Malice and Pusha T use this album to try to clear their conscience and sound off about almost 20 years of rapping while at the same time admitting their crimes and even asking God for forgiveness. “Freedom” kicks off the album by telling the listener not only how much…
Igloofest II: Electric Boogaloo
Well week 2 of Igloofest has come and gone, and at this point we’re running out of superlatives. 3 more nights. 9 more amazing DJ’s, and all the insanity we have come to expect from Montreal parties. We were lucky enough to make it to Friday and Saturday’s events, props to anyone who managed to get to all three nights. We missed the female-heavy lineup of Maus, Mightykat and Mark Farina on Thursday, but heard that the mix of deep…
Big news for The National
Well here’s some music news that has definitely made my day a whole lot better. Brooklyn’s finest, The National, have announced a 2010 tour as well as an upcoming album. The follow-up to 2007′s brilliant Boxer is still untitled, but they’ve announced a May release on 4AD records. Hopefully a new single will follow this announcement soon. If you’re unfamiliar with The National, you may know more about them than you think. Two members of the band, Aaron and Bryce…
